Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a surgical protocol developed by a group of surgeons to improve outcomes of patients undergoing colorectal surgery. The program is based on evidence from years of research into how patients can recover quickly from surgery and resume their usual activities. ERAS provides patients a multidisciplinary team approach before, during and after surgery to deliver patients the best outcome.

Principles of ERAS:

• Information and Counseling:

Patients receive information and counseling about their surgery. A class is provided to ensure patients are prepared with specific instructions to follow and what to expect. It is important to be informed about surgery and feel prepared.

• Pain Control:

Your team of doctors and nurses will have a plan to keep pain and discomfort at a tolerable level after surgery.

• Mobility after surgery:

Mobility will start soon after surgery. Getting out of bed and walking after surgery will help your recovery.

• Nutrition:

Nutrition is key in healing. As part of your recovery, your medical team will encourage you to eat and drink soon

after surgery.

Colorectal surgeons at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital have adopted this protocol for those requiring colorectal surgery and have seen excellent outcomes resulting in faster recovery, increased mobility after surgery, shorter hospital stays and decreased use of pain medications.
