Below are the October Medical Staff Updates. As a reminder, all providers must complete the attestation at the bottom of this page by October 31.
As I write this near the end of September, an attempt by Senate Republicans to end health care as we know it has thankfully failed. This attempt was the latest, and perhaps the worst, in a series of attacks on insurance coverage for Americans. It brought together a remarkable group of advocacy organizations in opposition, including the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association (https://www.ahip.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Joint-statement-AMA-AAFP-AHA-FAH-AHIP-BCBSA-9.23.17.pdf).
As I have followed these events, it seems to me that the central theme of these attacks is to reduce spending, which means reducing coverage, under Medicaid. It may be that many people think of Medicaid as primarily providing coverage for the poor, but in fact Medicaid is also critical to how we fund elder care, provide opiate treatment and take care of catastrophic illnesses, among many others. It is foundational to our entire system of health care.
In a thoughtful article (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/26/opinion/sunday/safety-net-hospitals-health-care.html), Dr. Ricardo Nuila, a physician in Houston, Texas, reminds us that Federal law requires hospitals to provide all patients with emergency care, regardless of their ability to pay. By cutting Medicaid and increasing the number of uninsured, Republicans would effectively impose drastic cost increases on hospitals.
As I have said here before, the Kaleida Health Medical/Dental Staff, administration and Board of Directors must be aligned around a shared vision that provides for the triad of good patient care, hospital success and provider success. Each one of those elements is critical; no one thrives if any one element is missing. I hope you will all continue to work with me to fight for access to and coverage for health care for all.

Kaleida Health
“The energy in this organization is palpable. It’s clear that you are focused on quality and continuous improvement…” – DNV GL surveyor
As you know, Kaleida Health recently completed the annual accreditation visit with DNV GL Healthcare Inc. DNV GL was here for several days to survey Kaleida Health’s hospitals and certify compliance with the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) standards.
The visit could not have gone any better. DNV GL closed out all of the non-conformities from last year. Kaleida Health was cited with only minor areas of improvement for this year, a remarkable achievement. DNV GL also noted that Kaleida Health is “the best we have ever seen” when it comes to the ISO 9001:2015 transition.
DNV GL lauded the workforce for its commitment to patient care and how they represent Kaleida Health. They felt the pride, the care and the culture. “It is evident that it is more than a job here – it’s a way of life,” is what the DNV GL stated.
Remember, the DNV GL visit is an independent and third party validation that Kaleida Health is delivering for this community.
Because of you, Kaleida Health once again sits in its rightful place as the employer of choice, the place where the greatest talent comes to work. And the place where you will always get the very best care.

Kaleida Health will continue to follow the New York State Department of Health directive titled, “Regulation and Prevention of Influenza Transmission by Healthcare and Residential Facility and Agency Personnel” to document the vaccination status of healthcare personnel.
Following the practice of other Western New York facilities and clinical best practice, this year, the influenza vaccination status of all healthcare personnel must be documented no later than November 30, 2017. Once influenza is declared prevalent in the region, all unvaccinated personnel must wear a surgical mask at all times while in areas where patients or residents are typically present during the entire influenza season.
Masks will be available at all main entrances of Kaleida Health’s hospitals throughout influenza season.
To obtain your vaccine:
Providers must have their Kaleida Health ID badge to receive the vaccine from Employee Health. At the time of vaccination, a Kaleida Health Employee Health nurse will apply a flu sticker on the right lower corner of the Kaleida Health ID badge to provide visual verification of vaccination.
Providers vaccinated by a facility or provider other than Kaleida Health will need to bring official proof of vaccination to Kaleida Health’s Employee Health Department in order to receive their sticker of verification.
Those who decline the influenza vaccine must complete a “Declination of Influenza Vaccine” form. Anyone who declines the vaccine due to a medical condition will also need to complete the “DOH Medical Exemption Statement” form. Details for both forms are available on Employee Health’s website on KaleidaScope.
Employee Health or a site designee will apply a yellow sticker on the right lower corner of the Kaleida Health ID badge of those who decline vaccination.
Kaleida Health’s Medical Staff Office will be tracking providers’ vaccination status. All providers must submit a copy of their proof of vaccination or declination of vaccination to the Medical Staff Office. Please scan and email documentation to Rosie Light at RLight@KaleidaHealth.org or fax to 859-5592.
UB Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit is thriving with new and exciting drug studies that are designed to help our community’s patients with various skin conditions.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin disease in which the skin is dry, itchy, red, cracked, thickened, and decreased quality of life. AD can be associated with allergies and asthma. There are both topical and systemic treatments available that can have serious side effects. Our Unit has participated in multiple AD clinical trials, including the one that brought Dupixent (Dupilumab), the first biologic injectable specific for AD, into FDA approval. We will soon begin recruitment for a new AD injectable biologic.
Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition in which patients develop thick, red, scaly plaques, particularly on the scalp, elbows and knees. Psoriasis can present with or without joint manifestations. Psoriasis can be associated with increased risk of heart disease, as well as decreased quality of life. We currently are recruiting patients for our psoriasis clinical trials.
Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and bullous pemphigoid (BP) that present with extensive areas of painful blisters on the skin and/or mouth. There are few centers in the country devoted to these rare, but potentially fatal diseases. Dr. Animesh Sinha, the head of the UB Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit, is a world-renowned dermatologist and scientist who specializes in skin autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. We are currently enrolling patients for several clinical trials in both PV and BP.
