October 2015

Below are the October Medical Staff Updates. As a reminder, all providers must complete the attestation at the bottom of this page by October 31.

Medical Leadership Message

Medical LeadersAs we head into fall, it is a very busy time at Kaleida Health.

• The new sepsis alert system is already credited with saving lives within the first two weeks of implementation. With proactive risk identification, the early recognition and rapid treatment of sepsis has improved patient safety.

• To date, over 450 providers have participated in a "Leading with CARE" educational session. The impact of this program is evident as Kaleida Health is seeing improvement in our HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) scores. If you have not had the chance to attend a session, please check Talent Management, Kaleida Health's online learning system, for session dates and times.

• ICD-10 is here now! ICD-10 will have a significant impact on how we document the care we provide. Over 500 providers have been trained on how to navigate the ICD-10 coding changes using the new Diagnosis Assistant in the EMR. In addition to the web-based training available on Talent Management, on-site training also will be available through October 9, 2015.

We look forward to working with our providers as we continue to improve the culture, quality and safety for our patients.

Thank you for allowing us to help you provide extraordinary care.

A Message from the President of the Medical/Dental Staff

George E. Matthews, MDThe Kaleida Health Medical Executive Committee has been quite busy over the past several months. To learn more about our recent activity and the new initiatives that will impact providers, I encourage you to attend the Medical/Dental Staff Semiannual Meeting on Thursday, October 8, 2015.

In addition to leadership updates, Deborah Reiner, vice president for Customer Relationship Management, HCA Healthcare, will give a keynote address. Her presentation, "Consumerism: Helping People Get the Care They Need," is more than recent industry jargon. Consumerism extends the core mission of a patient-centric organization to settings outside of the traditional bricks and mortar.  When done right, consumerism engages patients before they even know they need care, ensures dignity throughout their treatment, and forms a relationship long after treatment has ended.

I look forward to seeing you on October 8, for an evening that I believe will be quite informative and helpful as we continue to improve the quality and safety for our patients.

ICD-10 Transition

Today, October 1, 2015, is the official transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 for reporting diagnoses and procedures.

ICD-10 logoThe key to success transitioning to ICD-10 for providers is the need to record more specific and complete documentation within the Problems and Diagnoses section of a patient's record.

To assist with the transition, the "Introduction to Physician Transition Early and ICD-10" was assigned to providers. In addition, optional specialty specific training modules were also assigned and are available if more guidance is needed.

Besides the August special edition of the Medical Staff Updates, resources are available on the ICD-10 page accessible from KaleidaScope and InfoClique.

On-site technical and clinical support will remain until October 9, 2015. Also, an ICD-10 Central Support center is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 859-8888.

Drug Shortages

drugsAs a reminder, Kaleida Health offers a central location for healthcare professionals to learn what medications are in short supply. The critical drug shortages list is located on KaleidaScope in the Pharmacy (Drug Shortages) section under "Kaleida Links." The list, which reviewed daily, also includes any restrictions imposed on the medications in short supply.

While the critical drug shortages list may change frequently as certain drugs go off the list only to reappear several months later, Kaleida Health's pharmacy professionals continue to work hard to ensure adequate levels of these critical medications are available.

Please contact the site pharmacy departments if you have any questions about specific drug shortage or supply restrictions.
