Epilepsy Center Recognized as Level 4 Center by NAEC

Updated: 4/18/2016

Kaleida Healthís Epilepsy Center at Women & Childrenís Hospital of Buffalo has been recognized by The National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a Level 4 Center for 2016-2017. Level 4 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest-level medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

This is the seventh consecutive year the Epilepsy Center has received this accreditation. The centerís information and 2016-2017 designation is posted on the NAEC website at www.naec-epilepsy.org.

The NAEC is a non-profit 501c6 trade association with a membership of more than 200 specialized epilepsy centers in the United States. The primary objectives of NAEC are to connect people with epilepsy to specialized epilepsy care, and to support epileptologists and administrators in the operation of their epilepsy centers.

Fourth level epilepsy centers serve as a regional or national referral facility for intractable epilepsy patients. These centers provide the more complex forms of intensive neurodiagnostic monitoring, as well as more extensive medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial treatment. Fourth level centers also offer a complete evaluation for epilepsy surgery including intracranial electrodes and provide a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy. Many level 4 centers are actively involved in clinical trials and are well aware of trials conducted in other level 4 centers to make patient referrals. As part of this commitment, the comprehensive pediatric epilepsy program at Women & Children's Hospital recently launched prospective studies with medical marijuana (Cannabidiol) as adjunctive therapy for children with refractory epilepsy.

The comprehensive epilepsy program at Women & Childrenís Hospital offers a broad range of evaluation services and sophisticated therapies for children and adults suffering from seizures. This includes the department of pediatric neurosurgery's recent initiation of minimally invasive surgeries with laser guided ablation therapy for select cases of localization related epilepsy.

The Centerís 8-bed state-of-the-art facility allows for digital video and EEG monitoring of a patientís physical and brain activity 24-hours a day. Our dedicated and highly-specialized team is comprised of adult and pediatric epileptologists, neurosurgeons, nurses and nurse practitioners, neuro-psychologists, experts in imaging, skilled technicians, a specialized dietician, as well as a clinical research program.

The epilepsy programís mission is to improve the quality of life for people with epilepsy through compassionate care and sophisticated medical treatment. From initial evaluation to follow-up care, the epilepsy program promotes the overall well-being of our patients and helps them understand and live well with their condition.
