Andrea Martinez is a WNY resident who is battling stage IV ovarian cancer – for the second time. But that hasn’t stopped her from hosting fundraising events and raising awareness of the disease throughout the community. With the help of some close friends, Andrea created Angels of Awareness, a nonprofit organization with a mission to raise funds for continued research and early diagnosis of ovarian cancer, educate the community and develop survivorship programs for women and their families.

On August 1, 2013, Angels of Awareness held its first annual fundraiser at Giancarlo’s in Williamsville. On September 10, 2013 Andrea, joined by two of her friends and committee members, Kelly Cultrara and Christina Karl, donated a portion of the proceeds from that event to Linda Hubbard, RN, BSN and Barb Neilson, MSN, WHNP from the Women’s Services department at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. The donation will be used to fund the creation of an educational brochure on the risks, signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, and will help to form a support group for women who face the same diagnosis as Andrea.

Thank you, Andrea and Angels of Awareness, for your commitment and dedication to promoting research and advocacy in women’s health care!
