Buffalo General Medical Center has once again been recognized as a Best Hospital for 2022-23 by U.S. News & World Report. The Kaleida Health facility ranked #1 in the Buffalo Metro Area and #21 in New York State for the annual Best Hospitals ranking. The annual rankings and ratings, now in their 33rd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors make informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions and common elective procedures.

This is the fifth consecutive year that Buffalo General Medical Center, in conjunction with other Kaleida Health facilities, earned the top spot in the Buffalo Metro Area. U.S. News & World Report factors in volume, stats and quality metrics from Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, DeGraff Medical Park and Oishei Children’s Hospital to determine this year’s rankings.

“We are extremely proud of the entire Buffalo General Medical Center team,” said Cheryl Klass, interim president of Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute. "From our talented surgeons and their dedicated operating room teams to the specialized, compassionate nurses and support staff at the bedside, everyone at Buffalo General Medical Center is committed to providing the highest quality care and the newest technologies and procedures for our patients, many of whom come to us needing very complex care.”

Buffalo General Medical Center also earned High Performing ratings for the following 13 procedures and conditions in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average:

  • Aortic Valve Surgery
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Colon Cancer Surgery
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Attack
  • Heart Bypass Surgery
  • Heart Failure
  • Hip Replacement
  • Kidney Failure
  • Knee Replacement
  • Pneumonia
  • Stroke
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

For the 2022-2023 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. Fewer than half of all hospitals received any High Performing rating, and only four earned this rating in all procedures and conditions. State and metro area rankings reflect the highest performing hospitals in the area across multiple areas of care.

“When patients are considering their options for care, the Best Hospitals ratings are designed to help them identify hospitals that excel in the kind of care they may need,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “A hospital that’s earned a High Performing rating in a service may be a good option for patients in need of that service and their medical professionals to consider.”

U.S. News evaluated each hospital’s performance using a variety of measures such as survival rates, complication rates, patient experience and level of nursing care. The Best Hospitals methodology factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations and medical specialists.
