Kaleida Health Names Boyd President and CEO

Updated: 7/12/2022

Don Boyd has been named president and chief executive officer (CEO) for Kaleida Health.

“Don is a proven and trusted leader who has 25 years of experience, growth and success with Kaleida Health,” said Gary Crosby, chair of the Kaleida Health Board of Directors. “A natural team builder, he is the right person who the Board of Directors believes will move the organization forward as we find ourselves, like so many other hospital systems, navigating some very challenging times.”

Boyd, who had been serving as the president and chief operating officer for Kaleida Health since 2019, succeeds Bob Nesselbush, who is retiring.

“I am honored, and I thank the Board of Directors for their confidence in me and the team here – it is incredibly meaningful,” said Boyd. “That said, there is a lot of work to do. It is no secret that the national healthcare delivery landscape has changed dramatically since COVID-19. In fact, the staggering financial and operational impact is still being felt here at Kaleida Health. But I am confident that we can get through this. Together with the dedicated members of the Kaleida Health family, we will continue to evolve and grow to better serve our patients and this community.”

Boyd has been serving as president and chief operating officer, a role that gave him oversight of all day-to-day operations across Kaleida Health. During this time, he also led Kaleida Health’s award-winning and well documented response to COVID-19.

Prior to that, Boyd was executive vice president of business development for Kaleida Health, a role he held for 10 years. He built and grew numerous partnership and affiliations along the way, including Great Lakes Integrated Network, Upper Allegheny Health System, Brooks/TLC Hospital System Inc., Western New York Urology, Great Lakes Cancer Care Collaborative and more.

Boyd’s move into business development and operational integration came after his stint as president at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital. In that role, he helped lead the hospital's growth, particularly in the vascular service lines such as cardiac, stroke and vascular surgery plus the integration efforts for what is now the Gates Vascular Institute.

Crosby said, “On behalf of the Board of Directors, we thank Bob for his years of service with the organization, especially his work with the updated three-year strategic plan and the new quality/safety institute that has been implemented.”

“I am very proud of what we have accomplished at Kaleida Health these past few years,” Nesselbush said. “Coming home to Buffalo and having the opportunity to work with such dedicated physicians, nurses, leaders and staff has so been rewarding for me. Together, we met the COVID-19 challenge head on while, at the same time, repositioning Kaleida Health for the future. With all of the industry changes taking place, the organization is entering a new era in health care delivery. So it’s appropriate for new leadership now. I thank everyone who is part of the Kaleida Health family for all that they do in taking care of this great community.”
