A Successful Community Health & Advocacy Conference

Updated: 6/2/2022

On Friday, May 13, 2022, the Pediatric Residency Program hosted the first annual Community Health & Advocacy Conference led by Dr. Sarah Ventre from the Division of General Pediatrics. Dr. Ventre created, implemented and has been leading the advocacy program for the residents. Along with Dr. Fred Archer, they mentored several resident advocacy projects and shared their work with poster presentations during the conference. Topics included:

  • Early Intervention
  • Adolescent vaccinations
  • Reading/Literacy
  • Vaping prevention
  • Head Injury prevention
  • College preparation
  • Blood donation
  • Diaper access
  • Food insecurity
  • Nutrition & Physical activity
  • Child abuse
  • STI prevention and treatment
  • Birth Control/LARC
  • Advocacy in resident education

Over 20 community based organizations participated in the daylong conference. The feedback from the participants was exceedingly positive. Many people commented that this was “long overdue” and are “excited to explore new partnerships and collaborations.” They found the lectures and workshops to be highly engaging and productive, and are looking forward to future events.

We look forward to working with our community partners to explore opportunities for collaboration, especially in the wake of the tragic massacre of ten members of our Black and African American community on May 14. Our advocacy and engagement will be especially important in helping our community through this difficult time.
