Updated: 5/23/2022

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of David Hughes, MD, MPH, on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

Dr. Hughes was executive vice president for strategy and partnerships for Kaleida Health and the CEO of Great Lakes Integrated Network.

A friend and trusted colleague to so many in the organization and across the community, he was a visionary leader, accomplished physician, business owner, entrepreneur and engineer.

In August 2021, Dr. Hughes transitioned into his new role for the organization, focusing on strategy and relationships, in an effort to improve our population health footprint and pursue partnership opportunities with healthcare providers and payers. In this role, he also had oversight of Great Lakes Integrated Network, Optimum Physician Alliance and was the primary physician liaison with ECMC, UBMD as well as General Physician, PC.

Dr. Hughes was named Kaleida Health’s executive vice president and chief medical officer in June 2014. Prior to that he was the organization’s senior vice president and chief clinical integration officer. He joined us from our partner organization, the Erie County Medical Center.

In his career, he also served as Kaleida Health's medical director for employee health, an attending physician in emergency medicine at Kaleida Health and ECMC, an assistant clinical professor in emergency medicine for the University at Buffalo (UB), as well the president of the Governing Board for the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY) Faculty Practice Management Plan.
