Kaleida Health Once Again Recognized by Human Rights Campaign Foundation as LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader

Released: 3/29/2022 3:21:00 PM

Kaleida Health has once again been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation as an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader. The HRC released their 15th annual "Healthcare Equality Index" report, which scores healthcare facilities on policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) patients, visitors and employees.

Kaleida Health was one of 496 healthcare facilities across the country to earn HRC’s "LGBTQ+ Health Care Equality Leader" designation, receiving the maximum score in each section and earning an overall score of 100. A record 906 healthcare facilities actively participated in the 2022 HEI survey.

"Thanks to the incredible work of our Sexual and Gender Equity (SAGE) Employee Resource Group, Kaleida Health continues to provide patients with high quality, compassionate care, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression," said Shannon Bryant, chief diversity and inclusion officer for Kaleida Health. "In addition, the SAGE ERG has taken steps to ensure our own workforce feels safe and welcome. We remain steadfast in our mission to advance the health of the community, and we are always striving to ensure that members of the LGBTQ+ community feel comfortable and respected when seeking care at any of our facilities."

“Every person deserves to have access to quality healthcare, be respected and heard by their doctor, and feel safe in the facility where they are receiving care. But LGBTQ+ people are often subject to discrimination in all spaces, including healthcare facilities, which leads to members of the community avoiding care and anticipating our voices will not be respected in an incredibly vulnerable environment,” said Tari Hanneman, director of Health & Aging at The Human Rights Campaign. “The Healthcare Equality Index, at its core, strives to ensure LGBTQ+ people are protected and affirmed by their healthcare providers and feel safe seeking services. Our HEI active participants are truly pioneering the healthcare industry by implementing robust, comprehensive LGBTQ+ inclusive policies that hopefully, because of their work, will become standard practice.”

Kaleida Health has received this designation for the past six years and remains committed to providing affirmative, sensitive and informed health care to the LGBTQ+ community.
