Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute Receives DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification

Updated: 11/12/2021

Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute (BGMC/GVI) has been certified by DNV as a Comprehensive Stroke Center for the eighth consecutive year. The certification reflects the highest level of competence for the treatment of acute stroke events. BGMC/GVI is the only DNV certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in Western New York.

"Receiving this certification for the eighth year in a row is truly incredible – it speaks volumes to our staff’s dedication, determination and teamwork,” said Chris Lane, president of BGMC/GVI. “Not only did we get certified, but we also closed out all of the 2020 non-conformities. For this, I am so proud of our team.”

During the two-day survey, Adnan Siddiqui, MD, PhD, FACS, FAHA, director of neurological stroke services at Kaleida Health and chief executive officer and chief medical officer at the Jacobs Institute, presented on the new Alphenix 4D CT, which offers faster, safer and more accurate stroke interventions on one revolutionary system. The surveyors even got to observe a stroke code in action, with the patient being taken to the 4D scanner for evaluation.

DNV Surveyors complemented the stroke team, describing BGMC/GVI as “the beacon of stroke care across New York State.”

DNV Healthcare Comprehensive Stroke Center Accreditation is based on standards set by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that BGMC/GVI address the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.

Comprehensive stroke centers are the best-equipped medical centers in a given geographical area that can treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. In a growing number of states, stroke center certification determines to which facility a patient should be taken for the highest level of life-saving stroke care and technology.

BGMC/GVI treats more strokes than any other hospital in all of New York State and more than double of any hospital in Western New York. In fact, because of the stroke team’s outcomes, skill, and world-wide reputation, physicians from esteemed medical institutions such as Harvard, Duke, and Cleveland Clinic come to here to learn the latest surgical procedures and interventions for treatment of stroke.
