OCH Receives NYSDOH Designation as Specialty Care Center
Oishei Children's Hospital has been designated as a Neuromuscular Disorders Specialty Care Center site as part of the Wadsworth Center's Newborn Screening Program through the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
State health officials conducted a site visit in November 2018 and determined that Oishei Children's Hospital meets all educational and experiential qualifications set by the NYSDOH Wadsworth Center's Newborn Screening Program for the diagnosis and treatment of children with neuromuscular disorders.
As a Neuromuscular Disorders Specialty Care Center, Oishei Children's Hospital is considered qualified to diagnose and treat a group of disorders screened for in the newborn screening test panel. Newborn screening refers to medical tests performed to identify babies with certain disorders that, without intervention, may permanently affect newborns and their families. Early recognition and treatment of most of these disorders leads to a better outcome for the newborn.
The Neuromuscular Disorders Specialty Care Center at Oishei Children's Hospital, led by Osman Farooq, MD, is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and care team members including neurology, neurosurgery, imaging, rehabilitation medicine, genetics, labs and social work.
This state designation will help further enhance the care we're able to provide our patients and families.
