Kaleida Health Partners with the Buffalo Marathon to Raise Funds to Fight Heart Disease
Kaleida Health is partnering with the Buffalo Marathon to raise funds to fight heart disease in Western New York and benefit the best-in-class cardiac programs at Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute (BGMC/GVI.)
The newly created Kaleida Health “Heart to Heart Relay,” presented by The Buffalo Marathon, will feature teams of up to four who collectively run the marathon. After a low initial sign-up fee, they rally together to reach out to their social networks to fundraise in support of the cause. Whether their running in remembrance of a family member or are a living survivor of a cardiovascular disease, these teams will be dedicated to helping Western New York fight heart disease together.
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease accounts for one in seven deaths in the United States and about 92.1 million American adults are living with some form of cardiovascular disease or after-effects of a stroke. In Western New York, those rates are exponentially higher.
In Western New York, we are fortunate to have the Cardiac Program at Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, one of the highest ranked hospital programs in the nation. Because of their dedication to achieving best possible outcomes for their patients, the team consistently brings the newest technologies available and is able to treat all types of cardiac conditions. Treating patients right here in their community results in faster return to home and quicker recovery.
“We all know someone who has either lost someone to heart disease or who may be living with it today. With the support of the community through the Kaleida Health Heart to Heart Relay, we can work together to fight heart disease in Western New York and beyond,” said Jody Lomeo, president and CEO of Kaleida Health. “Our team at Kaleida Health is committed to providing the most advanced options right here in Buffalo.”
The Buffalo Marathon chose to partner with Kaleida Health and add this fundraising component this year to continue its vision of helping to better the health of Western New York.
Greg Weber, executive director for The Buffalo Marathon added, “The longstanding vision of the Buffalo Marathon is to improve the well-being of our community. A big part of that is promoting a healthy lifestyle. Partnering with Kaleida Health to create the Heart to Heart Relay to bring awareness to treating and curing heart disease is a perfect partnership to achieve that goal.”
Exchange points for the relay will be at 10k, 20k and 30k, with the first 3 legs of the race at 6.2 miles and the final leg at 7.6 miles. All finishers of the Kaleida Health Heart to Heart Relay will receive a custom medal with additional awards for those reaching team fundraising levels of $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 and the top fundraising team.
