Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery
What is minimally invasive surgery?

photoMinimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery is a technique which utilizes a few, very small incisions, as opposed to other surgeries where large incisions are made and the body cavity is exposed (called open surgeries). It is believed the first laparoscopic surgery was performed on a dog in 1902, followed by a human in 1910. For decades, the most common use of laparoscopy was the removal of the appendix and the diagnosis and surgical intervention of gynecological diseases and conditions. It wasn’t until the 1990s and the advent of computer chips in television cameras, that this minimally invasive technique was used for a much broader variety of procedures. The ability to project the internal surgical field on a magnified television monitor revolutionized the surgery and dramatically improved precision.
