Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the wait?

Treatment order is always shifting as new, unexpected patients arrive.  Medical personnel constantly evaluate the severity of patients’ illnesses or injuries and give the most urgent patients priority in treatment. Every effort is made to keep patients apprised of an estimated time for treatment.

Are cell phones allowed in the Emergency Department?

No. Out of respect for our patients, we ask that no cell phones are used in patient care areas.

Are there translators for those who don’t speak English?

Yes, all Kaleida Health facilities have access to interpreter services.  These services are available at no cost to the patient or their family.

Can my family members stay with me?

Yes, each patient can have up to two people in the room with them.  For the patient’s privacy, family members may be asked to step out during an examination or wait in the waiting room if the patient is having tests.  Young people under the age of 18 are discouraged from visiting unless given permission by the Emergency Department Attending Physician.

How do I secure my valuables if I have no one with me?

Our security staff will be happy to take your valuables and lock them in a safe for the duration of your stay. Simply ask the nurse to call security, and they will log the items and give you a receipt.

Is there lodging nearby?

Yes, the DoubleTree Club By Hilton is located on High Street, across from Buffalo General Medical Center’s main entrance. There are also several other hotels in the vicinity. For more options, please ask the volunteers at the information desk.
