Bone Density

Having strong bones is important for good health. A bone mineral density (BMD) test is the best way to measure the health of your bones. Bone densitometry or Dexa scan is the clinical terminology used for the test and it determines if you have osteoporosis or are at risk for developing it.

Osteoporsis is a disease that causes bones to weaken and puts a person at a greater risk for fractures. A bone density test uses X-rays to measure how much calcium and other minerals are packed into a segment of bone. The bones most commonly tested are located in the spine, hip and forearm. Talk with your physician to determine if a bone density test would be appropriate for you.
