Lung & Cystic Fibrosis Center Services and Specialties

As an American Board of Pediatrics recognized sub-specialty, the Division of Pulmonology is part of UBMD Pediatrics and affiliated with the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Certified by the national Cystic Fibrosis Center as a care, teaching and research center, the CF center of WNY includes both pediatric and adult programs for patients with non-acute respiratory diseases (care is provided to adults by internal medicine-certified specialists). The Center has the only New York State designated Apnea Program in Western New York, providing management for children who are discharged home on oxygen, apnea and bradycardia monitors.

The Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutic Development Center has participated in more than 40 clinical trials and has helped bring several drugs through development to clinical use for patients with CF, focusing on inhaled antibiotics, mucoactive drugs and CFTR potentiators and correctors.

Assisted Breathing Center

We have the only New York State-designated Apnea Program in Western New York and provide management for children who are discharged home on oxygen, apnea and bradycardia monitors. We evaluate and manage children who need breathing assistance through use of CPAP, BiPap, mechanical ventilation, cough-assist devices and other therapies to improve airway clearance.

General Pulmonology Care

• Evaluation and care management of children who need breathing assistance through use of CPAP, BiPap, mechanical ventilation, cough assist devices, and other therapies to improve airways clearance.
• Pediatric pulmonologists or nurse practitioners with expertise in pediatric pulmonology.
• Social workers who can assist with patients that have complex medical needs.
• Collaboration with the Division of Genetics to provide follow-up for infants with positive newborn screens for cystic fibrosis.

Diagnostic Testing

The Pediatric Pulmonary Diagnostic Laboratory provides diagnostic testing for community-based providers, including:

• Exercise testing 
• Pulmonary function testing
• Sweating testing

Also offered:

• Transcription and interpretation of events recorded in memory monitors in babies with apnea and bradycardia, as well as overnight home oximetry studies.

Lung Center Sweat Test Lab Services and Specialties

Providing the only sweat test laboratory in Western New York certified by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and college of American Pathologists.

Sweat stimulation by iontophresis was instituted at Children's Hospital in 1976, which is the migration of small ions in an electrical field. The Gibson and Cook Sweat Test Apparatus is used to achieve the iontopheresis. During the stimulation of sweat glands, a small amount of pilocarpine nitrate is iontoporesed under cleansed skin for five minutes. The patient may experience some discomfort, but it is not painful.

Purpose

To check the concentration of salt sodium chloride (NaCl) in the sweat. Sweat will be collected from two different areas of the body, usually the right and left forearms.

Research

The CF Center has been actively involved in clinical research focused primarily on cystic fibrosis for over a decade, with physicians who regularly publish their work in scholarly journals with ancillary care providers who are regular participants in national meetings.

Pulmonary Function Lab

The Pulmonary Exercise Diagnostic Laboratory offers the most advanced technology in diagnosing and monitoring lung disease.  The Staff specialized in testing children as young as 5 years of age and welcomes adults as well for Spirometry, Lung volumes, Resistance Measurements, Diffusing Capacity, Methacholine Challenge and Exercise Testing.
