Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo operates the region's largest, safest, and most advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  Along with being the tertiary referral NICU, Women & Children’s Hospital has the region’s only board-certified maternal-fetal medicine obstetricians.

In 2012, 327 critically ill and often premature newborns were transferred to Women & Children’s Hospital from other hospitals throughout Western New York and beyond by our well-developed ground and air transport system staffed by Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and Respiratory Therapists.

Our advanced state-of-the-art medical therapy for neonatal patients includes:

  • Advanced ENT procedures
  • Bedside surgery
  • Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation, nitric oxide inhalation
  • High frequency ventilation
  • Laparoscopic surgery
  • Retinal surgery
  • Surfactant replacement
  • Non-invasive ventilation
  • Whole body cooling for HIE

The NICU staff includes attending neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, licensed respiratory therapists, a psychologist, family service counselors, physical therapists and occupational therapists. A nutritionist and clinical pharmacists participate daily in bedside work rounds.

Overnight facilities for out-of-town families are available in conjunction with the Ronald McDonald House. The hospital family lounge is equipped with Internet access, a microwave, refrigerator and lockers.
