Rehabilitation Services

Kaleida Health’s Rehabilitation programs are designed to care for all of your pre- and post-operative needs following an orthopaedic surgical procedure. We will design a rehabilitation program to meet your unique personal needs and ensure your safe return to home. The program will teach you to safely care for yourself and will assist you in returning to the highest possible level of function.

Pre-operative Orthopaedic Classes
Before your surgery we provide educational classes to increase your awareness and understanding of the surgical and post-operative rehabilitative process. This class contains pertinent information presented by members of our nursing, therapy and discharge planning staff.

Post-operative acute Orthopaedic Services
Following your orthopedic surgery you will receive physical and possibly occupational therapy directly on the nursing unit. All patients begin therapy on the day following their surgery and therapy services are provided 7 days per week. The therapists work closely with your orthopaedic surgeon to progress your functional activity and independence until you are ready to be discharged. If necessary, the therapists will further assist you in making a decision regarding your needs for ongoing rehabilitative care after the initial hospital stay.

Post-Acute Rehab Services
Following discharge from the hospital, many patients require additional rehabilitation prior to being able to function safely at home. There are two levels of post-acute rehabilitation: Acute Medical Rehabilitation and Subacute Rehabilitation. Your surgeon, therapists and discharge planners will assist in determining the Rehab Unit that will best meet your needs.

Kaleida Health offers continuing inpatient post-acute rehabilitation at Buffalo General Hospital and DeGraff Hospital. Regardless of the Kaleida Hospital that you have your surgery at, you can be transferred to either of these locations for further rehabilitation. Both programs strive to help you become as independent as possible, working with you and your family to reach the goal of independence. A Rehabilitation physician will monitor your medical and rehabilitation needs on a daily basis. We provide therapy services 7 days per week for approximately 3 hours per day. The treatment team also includes rehabilitative nurses, dietitians, case managers, social workers and pastoral care.

Our hospital-based program allows your care to be supported by the full spectrum of hospital services. All medical services as well as emergency care are offered on site.
