Seventh Free Community Health Screenings To Be Offered

Buffalo, NY, April 29, 2002 - For the seventh year, the Diabetes-Endocrinology Center of WNY, based at Kaleida Health's Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital, will offer Free Community Health Screenings on two weekends in May at area Tops Market locations. Each year, the center reaches close to 2,000 Western New Yorkers with testing for diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid disease and osteoporosis, through this screening program.

The screenings take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on:

  • Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 at Tops International, 3980 Maple Road at North Bailey Avenue, Amherst.

  • Friday, May 17 at Tops Market, Union Road at 3865 George Urban Boulevard, Cheektowaga.

  • Saturday, May 18 at Tops Market, 355 Orchard Park Road (at the former Seneca Mall location), West Seneca.

    Also offered will be informational tables and displays with valuable health and wellness information.

    "Diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid disease and osteoporosis are potentially devastating conditions that affect thousands of Western New Yorkers. Through our screenings, we help our neighbors with early detection and prevention," noted Paresh Dandona, M.D., Medical Director of the Diabetes-Endocrinology Center of WNY.

    Partnering with the center to offer the screenings are Tops Pharmacy, the Western New York Podiatry Association, the Kaleida Health Center for Laboratory Medicine and the Erie County Department of Health.

    Corporate and community sponsors include the American Diabetes Association, Aventis Pharmaceuticals Corp., Disetronic Medical Systems, Inc., Eli Lilly & Co., GlaxoSmithKline, Lifescan, Inc., Medtronic MiniMed, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp., Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals Corp., Pfizer, Inc., and Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc.

    Advance registration, which begins Tuesday, April 30 and runs through Tuesday, May 14, is recommended. To register, call 716-858-6674, Monday through Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Walk ins also are welcome.
