STILL TIME TO HEAD OFF INFLUENZA THIS SEASON! 2001 BUFFALO, NY, Dec. 21, 2001 - There's still time to start the New Year off on a healthier note - the Kaleida Health VNA Flu Immunization Campaign runs through mid-January, extending your chances to receive a flu or pneumonia shot. Immunization sessions will be held at area Wegmans and Quality Markets at select locations Dec. 28 through Jan. 12, and during the Healthy Living Expo on Jan. 19 and 20. "With the peak influenza season in Western New York still ahead of us, this is a perfect opportunity to gain that edge on wellness for the winter," said Donna Sauer, R.N., coordinator, Kaleida Health Immunization Campaign. The flu vaccine is recommended for adults ages 18 and older, adults with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease; pregnant women in their fourth month or later during the flu season; residents of nursing homes and chronic care facilities, and health care workers and others who have close contact with persons at high risk. Flu shots cost $15, however, Medicare will cover the cost for those with Part B coverage if they bring their Medicare card with them to the flu shot site. Other insurance providers who cover the cost are Independent Health, Univera Healthcare, and Senior Blue of Blue Cross & Blue Shield. Pneumonia shots cost $25. The pneumonia vaccine is recommended for those 65 and older who have never had it; those who had it before they were 65 should repeat the pneumonia vaccine in five years; plus, anyone with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease; anyone whose immune system is weakened due to long-term steroid therapy, HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy, non-functioning or no spleen, or organ transplant. KeyBank is sponsor of the campaign and the Kaleida Health Foundation administers it. Through the 2001 campaign, nearly $1 million will have been contributed to provide charity home care through the Visiting Nursing Association of WNY to those who otherwise could not afford it. # # #
