Free Car Seats, Childbirth Classes Available to Teens at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital

2001

Buffalo, NY, March 21, 2001 - A new concept in childbirth education has been introduced at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst: prenatal education classes especially for adolescent mothers-to-be. All teens who complete the four-week series of classes receive a free infant car seat, courtesy of the Kaleida Health Foundation.

The first Prepared Childbirth Series for Teens begins at Millard Fillmore Suburban, 1540 Maple Road, on Monday, April 23 and takes place each Monday through May 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Topics covered include the basic anatomy of pregnancy; comfort measures during pregnancy; labor and delivery, and breathing and relaxation techniques - the same information provided during classes for older moms - but with a special emphasis on promoting a healthy lifestyle during the adolescent years, noted Carol Ahrens, R.N., Kaleida Health Director of Childbirth Education.

"Teens feel more comfortable among their peers, and our classes are designed with their needs in mind," Ahrens said.

Upon completing the series, teens receive a gift certificate for a car seat of their choice from Babies R Us. The retailer has partnered with Kaleida and the Kaleida foundation and will also provide in-store instruction on how to properly utilize the infant safety seat.
