Oishei Children’s Hospital Surpasses 90 Percent Completion
Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo announced today construction on the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital is more than 90 percent complete and remains on schedule to open in November 2017.
After breaking ground in October 2014 and completing the entirety of the building’s exterior in late 2016, interior construction of the new facility – including installation and testing of the mechanical and electrical systems – is nearly complete.
Recent construction milestones include the completion all operating rooms, elevators and floors 8 through 12 where the mother baby unit, pediatric intensive care unit, medical surgical units and hematology/oncology unit reside.
“Now that the interior is nearly complete, it is exciting to see the countless hours of time and effort poured into creating a one-of-a-kind, child-friendly space finally take shape,” said Allegra Jaros, president of Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. “We are just a few short months away from opening the doors of the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital and introducing the next generation of comprehensive pediatric care to the women and children of Western New York.”
Turner Construction Company – an international construction services company headquartered in New York City – is the construction manager for the project. Recent construction highlights include:
- Floors 8 through 12, operating rooms, all elevators, door frames and hardware, the ceiling grid, the dialysis system and the pharmacy (including the pharmacy box picker) are complete.
- The fire alarm system, generator, the cooling system for the HVAC and the medical gas systems are complete.
- All sidewalks, landscaping, driveways and Epoxy floors are 90 percent complete.
- The first floor – including the main lobby and the emergency department’s lobby spaces – is 85 percent complete.
Upcoming milestones include the completion and certification of the helipad in July, the installation of the roof garden and the removal of the trailers and site fencing in August.
The historic $270 million Oishei Children’s Hospital will be an integral part of the medical campus, linking with Buffalo General, the Gates Vascular Institute, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the new University at Buffalo Medical School and more. With 12 floors and 185 beds, the modern facility will allow the hospital to maintain its status as one of only 43 free-standing children’s hospitals in the nation – and the only one of its kind in New York State.
