Doctors of the World, Buffalo Philharmonic Collaborate to Support New John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital
JoAnn Falletta leads July 19 benefit performance featuring physicians from all over the world performing with BPO
To date, doctor-musicians from England, Norway, South Africa, Taiwan, Denmark, Germany, Costa Rica, Japan, and across the United States have committed to perform in this concert. They will spend five days in Buffalo, attending full-orchestra rehearsals with the BPO and practicing in sections with BPO musicians before the culminating concert. Forty doctors have signed up for this side-by-side musical experience, including one of Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo's very own Pediatric Urologists, Pierre Williot, MD.
The collaboration was suggested by two-time BPO Fantasy Camp participant and Grand Island physician Fred Albrecht. He connected the BPO to the global network of doctor-musicians who play together each year in different locations and raise money for local health organizations. This will be the first time this has been done as a side-by-side concert with a professional orchestra.
Under the baton of JoAnn Falletta, the Doctors of the World Orchestra will perform Holst’s “The Planets,” Bernstein’s Overture to “Candide,” and Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.” Tickets for this concert are $25 each, and proceeds benefit the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital. A VIP ticket for the concert for $150 includes a post-concert reception with the doctors and BPO musicians as well as premium seating for the concert.

“I look forward to uniting this international group of doctor-musicians to play side-by-side with our own international orchestra,” said BPO Music Director, JoAnn Falletta. “The side-by-side experiences have been wonderful, and everyone is pleased to use their talents in support of such a worthy cause. It is our hope that the Western New York community turns out to support the doctors, the BPO, and the planned John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.”
The week will also be a showcase for the Buffalo Niagara region. The doctors will have a number of opportunities to experience the region, including a tour of the Darwin Martin House and a sunset sail on the Spirit of Buffalo. Doctor-musicians who are interested in a deeper musical experience can also sign up to participate in chamber groups.
“This project exemplifies the best of Buffalo,” said Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Society Inc. Chair, Louis P. Ciminelli. “The BPO is proud to join with the other cultural institutions in the region in supporting the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital. We are pleased that so many doctor-musicians will be lending their talents to this project and coming to see everything the region has to offer.”
Music and the arts will be integral to the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital as tools for healing and respite. Plans include a performance stage in the central lobby and audio/video technology in patient rooms to provide access to all live performances.
“We are filled with anticipation over this one-of-a-kind event in support of the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital,” said Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo President, Allegra Jaros. “It is heartwarming to know that doctors are traveling from around the world to help ensure that our region’s families receive the best possible care in a state-of-the-art facility. We cannot thank enough the BPO and all participating musicians for their efforts.”
As Buffalo's cultural ambassador, the Grammy Award-winning BPO under the leadership of music director JoAnn Falletta presents more than 100 concerts each year. Since 1940, the orchestra's home has been Kleinhans Music Hall, a National Historic Landmark with a reputation as one of the finest concert halls in the United States. During the tenure of JoAnn Falletta, the BPO has rekindled its history of radio broadcasts and recordings, including the release of 27 new recordings on the Naxos and Beau Fleuve labels. The vision for the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital is to be recognized as the innovator, the highest quality, highest value provider and partner, and the regional referral center for women and children’s health care for Kaleida Health, in Western New York and beyond.
