The Parent Lounge in the Hematology & Oncology in-patient unit of Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, which was opened and dedicated in 2013 to a former oncology patient Colin Wegner, has since been fully refurnished with new appliances, tables and chairs all thanks to a generous donation from the Wegner family.

With the help of friends and family, Colin Wegner, a Nichol’s school graduate, raised $10,000 in 2013 through a bike ride and fundraiser following at Nickel City Café. Colin then chose to use these funds to create a parent lounge in the Hematology & Oncology Unit, where he had been a frequent visitor after being diagnosed with a brain tumor three years ago.

More recently in 2014, the rest of the money from Colin and his family went towards purchasing new furniture and appliances such as a new microwave, refrigerator and computer for the lounge.

Colin was able to be present last August for the original dedication, but passed away in December, 2013 before he could see the lounge fully furnished. Colin’s mother and aunt visited to see the final project, and brought a framed photo of Colin to place in the center of the room.

The parent lounge is a family room for other patients and their families receiving care in the Hematology & Oncology Unit. The lounge’s purpose is to serve as a comfortable place away from home for these parents and families to relax while their child is being treated.

The Hematology/Oncology Division is part of UBMD Pediatrics and affiliated with the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. This Division provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient services for children and adolescents with malignancies and blood disorders. Care by the Division is provided at both the Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
