Banas Appointed Medical Director of Non-Invasive Cardiology at Kaleida Health
Michael Banas, MD, FACC, FAHA, FASE, FASNC, RPVI, has been appointed medical director, non-invasive cardiology, Kaleida Health.
Steven Horn, MD, FACC, FASE, FASNC, who had held that position for nearly five years, has stepped down to focus on his private practice.
"I am excited to become the director of non-invasive cardiology, particularly during this time of renaissance for Kaleida Health, the University at Buffalo, and the entire Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus," said Banas.
As medical director, Banas will be responsible for ongoing program development, quality improvement and patient satisfaction of the Non-Invasive Cardiology Laboratories (NICLs) at Buffalo General Medical Center, Gates Vascular Institute, DeGraff Memorial Hospital and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. He will also work through the Joint Operating Committee on quality and performance improvements and obtaining and maintaining accreditation of the echocardiography laboratories including transthoracic, transesophageal, stress testing, CT angiography and emerging modalities.
"In addition to cardiology, Dr. Banas has extensive experience in biomedical engineering and research," said L. Nelson Hopkins, III, MD, president, Gates Vascular Institute. "This breadth of experience will be a powerful catalyst for growth within the non-invasive cardiology programs of Kaleida Health."
Banas is a cardiologist with Buffalo Heart Group (BHG). Prior to joining BHG, he was a research scientist at the University at Buffalo Center for Research in Cardiovascular Medicine.
He is board-certified in internal medicine with subcertification in cardiovascular disease.
Horn was named medical director, non-invasive cardiology, Kaleida Health, in 2009.
Under his leadership, Horn transformed the Non-Invasive Cardiology Department physician structure and cohesively aligned several private practice groups along with University physicians to provide 24/7 reading panel coverage. He is also credited with leading the conversion to electronic structured reporting along with acquisition of new echo units for the entire system and facilitating Intersocietal Accreditation Commission of Kaleida Health's echocardiology labs.
"I have enjoyed serving as medical director of non-invasive cardiology for the last nearly five years," said Horn. "Dr. Banas will be a great asset to the medical leadership team."
