David Janicke, MD, PhD, Appointed Medical Director, Buffalo General Medical Center Emergency Department
Robert McCormack, MD, is stepping down from that position to focus on his roles as chief of service of Emergency Medicine at Kaleida Health, as well as faculty member and vice chair of the University at Buffalo's (UB) Department of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Janicke most recently served as associate director of the Emergency Department at BGMC and medical director, Emergency Medicine, Vascular Services (a position he will continue to hold).
"Dr. Janicke has worked closely with the team to improve process and improve the patient experience," said Lisa Schmidt, chief operating officer of core services at BGMC. "His commitment to leadership will provide us direction and clinical support, ensuring that quality care is always provided in the Emergency Department."
Dr. Janicke began his clinical career as an Emergency Department attending at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle and Suburban Hospitals in 1991. In 1995, he joined Millard Fillmore Health System Physicians Emergency Services. In 2008, he was named director of the Emergency Department at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital and worked closely with Dr. McCormack on the Emergency Department integration with Buffalo General in March of 2012.
In addition to his new role, Dr. Janicke will retain the position of physician quality director at Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute and will also continue on the Great Lakes Health Board of Directors.
"I look forward to taking on the important role of medical director of the Emergency Department. The Emergency Department has very dedicated nurses, medical providers, and support staff who understand the tough journey from good to great. It will be an honor to work with them," said Dr. Janicke. "Achieving the level of leadership expertise demonstrated by Dr. McCormack will be a challenge. Fortunately, it is one I am ready to tackle thanks in part to the year and a half of mentoring that Dr. McCormack has provided me."
Dr. McCormack joined Kaleida Health in 1996 as an Emergency Department attending at Buffalo General. He became medical director of the department in 1999 and in 2004, was also named chief of service, Emergency Medicine, Kaleida Health.
"I sincerely thank Dr. McCormack for his contributions and leadership of the BGMC Emergency Department," said Cheryl Klass, senior vice president of operations at BGMC and president of Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo. "He leaves the Emergency Department in the very capable hands of Dr. Janicke, who will continue the transformational leadership of the Emergency Department."
"It has been a pleasure to serve as medical director of the BGMC Emergency Department for the past 14 years through tremendous growth and change," said Dr. McCormack. "Dr. Janicke is a talented physician and leader who will make this transition seamless and will bring the BGMC Emergency Department to the next level of patient-centered emergency care."
