UNYTS Donates Funding and Books to Provide Age Appropriate Reading Materials for Patients and Families

Released: 2/8/2013
Allegra Jaros, Chief Operating Officer, thanks representatives from UNYTS who delivered the many books and funds to providing reading materials for patients and families.

Hundreds of books and $1500 were recently donated by UNYTS to provide age appropriate reading materials in the new FamilyResourceCenter and a traveling book cart called the “Book Nook” at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.

Throughout the month of December for every pint of blood donated, UNYTS donated a book to the “Book Nook”, a traveling book cart that allows patients to read or have a volunteer read to them. These books will also be used in the new FamilyCenteredResourceCenter that is expected to open in February of 2013.

The funds will be used to purchase new books at a discount price from “Monkey See, Monkey Do”, a bookstore located in Clarence, New York. These books will also be made available to the patients and families in the FamilyResourceCenter.

“Kids love to pick out their own books, they are a window to the world”, said Ann Maghran, Family Centered Care Coordinator, and facilitator of the Family Advisory Council, a group of families and hospital staff who partnered up for the benefit of patients and families. “I believe the center provides an environment that allows families to relax, recharge, and research”.

Martha Hickey, Volunteer Services Coordinator, who oversees the “Book Nook” program, gave recognition to all the volunteers involved in creating this new program and the continuous partnership with UNYTS.

UNYTS is the primary supplier of organ, eye, tissue and blood donations for Kaleida Health and Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.
