Kathryn D. Bass, MD, Medical Director of Trauma at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and Erie County Undersheriff Mark Wipperman urge the public to leave the fireworks to the pros this Fourth of July. The two partnered on July 3 to demonstrate the serious injuries caused by common fireworks such as M-80s and sparklers.

|6/27/2014||Pediatric Dermatology Adds Phototherapy to List of Services at WCHOB|
The Department of Pediatric Dermatology at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo recently expanded its list of available services to include Phototherapy, a state-of-the-art ultraviolet light therapy used to treat a variety of skin disorders. The department is already averaging 2-3 patients daily for the treatment.

On June 23, 2014 Assemblyman Ray Walter (R,C,I-Amherst) officially kicked off his annual “Christmas in July” toy drive to benefit Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. Area residents are asked to donate new, unwrapped toys at various locations across Western New York, starting now through July 25. On Tuesday, July 29, Walter will be joined by special guests to distribute the gifts to the children at the Hospital.

Lorna Fitzpatrick, MD, Chief, Division of Medical Education and Medical Director, Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program, was recently interviewed by Business First in regards to the upcoming Doctors of the World concert with the BPO to benefit the Oishei Children’s Hospital and efforts to bring the culturals, including music, into the new hospital.

|On June 12, Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex brought the speedway to Women & Children’s Hospital. One race car and one pace car were on display outside of the Hospital’s main entrance for patients and their families to see and tour. A handful of drivers were also on site to visit with patients, sign autographs and take photos. |

|Martin Brecher, MD, who began treating pediatric cancer patients at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo in 1972 and at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1975 and since became Chief, Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, for Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and Associate Professor and Chief, Hematology/Oncology, for the University at Buffalo, as well as Chairman of Pediatrics for Roswell Park, announced he will retire from active clinical practice in 2014.|

|On June 13, 2014, the funding source for the Foster Grandparent Program of Erie County changed its focus to serving the long term and measureable education needs of disadvantaged children – which does not include working in hospitals. With that said, six current Foster Grandparents at Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo have been released from the program.|
