Admissions: Lobby

For patients undergoing scheduled surgeries or procedures at the Gates Vascular Institute, the Admissions Department, located in the lobby, is the first stop. The Admissions staff registers patients and gathers all pertinent demographic, financial and insurance information needed to secure services.

For patients arriving at the Emergency Department who are experiencing a vascular, cardiac or stroke event that requires a procedural or surgical intervention, they will be transferred directly to the GVI.

Cardiac Services

The Gates Vascular Institute cardiac team performs more cardiac procedures than any other local hospital, including minimally invasive procedures that let patients recover faster with less pain, fewer scars and a lower risk of infection. The team also performs procedures not available anywhere else in Western New York, like TAVR (Transcather Aortic Valve Replacement). This revolutionary technology gives hope to patients previously deemed inoperable.

Stroke Care Center

“Get to Gates” is more than an advertising slogan. It’s a call to action that, when heeded, can mean the difference between a positive outcome and a less than positive outcome for someone experiencing a stroke.

The Gates Stroke Center is the largest stroke program in the Northeast and one of the largest in the country. There is no other stroke center in New York State that can compare with the world-renowned expertise and 24/7/365 availability of the stroke and endovascular neurosurgeons at Gates.

The Gates Stroke Center offers patients every medical and surgical option currently available for the treatment of stroke.  No other stroke center in Western New York offers all of the treatment options that are performed at Gates.

Surgical Services: Third Floor

The Gates Vascular Institute boasts seven brand new operating rooms located on the third floor, which feature the latest surgical technology. Surgical patients are taken to the PACU (Pre/Post Anesthesia Care Unit) where the anesthesiologist begins surgery preparation. This includes the insertion of intravenous lines through which drugs and medications will be delivered during the operation. The surgeon will also see the patient and answer any last minute questions.

Loved ones waiting for surgical patients will be directed to the waiting room where they can be kept up-to-date on the patient’s progress via an electronic whiteboard. This board will let family members know when the patient has gone into surgery, is in recovery, and is being brought to the inpatient room. If the surgery will take an extended period of time, someone on the surgical team will periodically call the waiting room to give an update on the patient’s surgery.

After surgery, the patient will be brought back to the PACU (also called the recovery room). Here, the specialized nursing staff will assess and care for the patient, evaluating the patient’s vital signs, progress in regaining consciousness and pain level.
