Orthopedics

Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Unit

Pediatric unit specializing in the care of pediatric patients of all ages with medical illnesses, including those diagnosed with childhood cancers and blood disorders.

Variety 4 specializes in the care of pediatric oncology (cancer) patients. Our pediatric oncology team headed by Dr. Martin Brecher directs the diagnosis and treatment of patients with childhood cancer. Our child life specialists are experienced in addressing the special needs of our patient population, and in helping them cope during their hospitalization.

Our team of healthcare professionals believes in the importance of providing compassionate, family centered care in a respectful environment. As a result, each patient, parent and family member is invited to ask questions, make suggestions and offer comments about the care being given. We want to provide you with the medical information you need to make educated choices about your child’s care. If there is something you do not understand, please let us know so we can direct you to the person who can best answer your questions.

Nursing Team

Typically, a registered nurse (RN) will be assigned to care for your child daily. You may also meet a nurse’s aide who will take your child’s vital signs and transport your child to and from tests or procedures.  Nursing shifts are: 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.- 7:30 a.m.

Private/Attending Physician

Your private pediatrician is involved with your child’s care while he/she is in the hospital and gives direction to the residents coordinating your child’s care.

Residents

Our residents are participating in a 3-year pediatric residency. A second or third year resident will oversee and coordinate your child’s care. In addition, a first year resident will be assigned to your child to take care of his/her daily needs.

Medical Students

You may see third or fourth year medical students who are studying the pediatric specialty.

Discharge Planner

Discharge planning begins at the time of admission and continues throughout your child’s hospital stay.   Our discharge planner will arrange for any specific home care needs that your child may have.
