What are Hernias?

Woman in painApproximately 5 million Americans experience a hernia, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. A hernia is a bulge of tissue-usually fat or intestines-that most commonly protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. There are many causes of hernias. Some can be present at birth, the result of malformation of pathways during fetal development, or they can be a result of a previous surgical incision or wound where there is a weakness in the abdominal wall. The majority of hernias require surgical repair. In rare instances, the health of the patient or the size or kind of the hernia will make surgery inadvisable. In these cases, close monitoring of the hernia or the use of assist devices is necessitated.
