Dialysis Treatments

Buffalo General Medical Center is committed to improving the quality of life for patients experiencing renal failure through the provision of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The compassionate dialysis team will do everything possible to make dialysis treatment as comfortable and stress free.

Hemodialysis Treatment

Hemodialysis treatments are for acute and chronic kidney failure patients. The Center is fully equipped with 22 outpatient stations and five inpatient stations. Each patient is assigned a Registered Nurse who coordinates care in conjunction with the Hemodialysis Team.

  • Transplant program referral
  • Transportation arrangements
  • Social Worker
  • Travel coordination for dialysis treatment
  • Dietary counseling (recipes, etc.)
  • Financial counseling

An "on-call" registered nurse is available seven days a week during non-operational hours.

Peritoneal Dialysis Treatment

Registered Nurses coordinate patient care along with other members of the kidney team and is available seven days a week during non-operational hours.

Patients are trained in CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) by a registered nursein the outpatient clinic. The length of training is individualized and scheduled on a weekly basis. During the training period, patients will be given ample time to learn the dialysis procedure and be able to perform the procedure in a safe manner. All dialysis supplies are provided by the clinic during the training period. Once training has been completed, a monthly clinic visit is required.

Patients are encouraged to bring a friend or family member to the training as another set of ears and to provide additional support.

Patients' Responsibility for Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis

  • Patients should arrive at the clinic a few minutes prior to their appointment.   Phones are available for patients to schedule rides home with a cab or family.
  • If the patient needs help with transport service, they should alert the Social Worker.
  • As an outpatient, it is the patient’s responsibility to bring or buy food.  There is a Tim Horton’s in the main lobby and a full cafeteria on the first floor.
  • It is important to follow the treatment plan that was developed by the dialysis team.
  • Patients should ask questions if they do not understand something.
  • Translation services are available.

Other Important Health Information

  • Stay as active as possible. Walking is good for most dialysis patients. Patients should consult their doctor on the form of activity best suited to their needs and health.
  • Patients are encouraged to learn as much as they can about kidney disease, dialysis and their care.
  • Feel free to ask questions at any time.
  • Including family and friends in patient care, asking for their support, and attending support group meetings is also encouraged.
