Neonatology is a sub-specialty of pediatric medicine that pertains to the care of ill or premature newborns requiring special medical care.
Newborns that require neonatal care include, but are not limited to, infants born prematurely or born with low birth weight (intrauterine growth retardation) or born with congenital malformations (birth defects).
A specially trained neonatal nurse practitioner is on duty at Millard Fillmore Suburban 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide the specialized support these infants need.
Infants with more complex medical needs will be transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo (WCHOB) by the Neonatal Transport Team, which consists of neonatal nurse practitioners and specially trained neonatal respiratory therapists who are able provide stabilization and transport to WCHOB.
