Neonatology
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a regional referral center for critically ill newborns, servicing the eight counties of Western New York and beyond.

Over 740 newborns are admitted to the NICU annually. Of those, 240 are transferred to WCHOB by the well-developed ground and air transport team staffed by Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and Respiratory Therapists.

Dedicated staff of highly trained physicians, nurses and specialists ensure the needs of each patient and family are closely attended. NICU staff includes a psychologist, family service counselors, licensed respiratory therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists. A nutritionist and clinical pharmacists participate daily in bedside work rounds.

Advanced, state-of-the-art medical therapy of neonatal patients include high frequency ventilation, extra corporeal membrane oxygenation, nitric oxide inhalation, surfactant replacement, bedside surgery, laparoscopic surgery, retinal surgery and advanced ENT procedures. WCHOB is the only hospital in Western New York to provide all pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties.
