Rehabilitation after Stroke

Rehabilitation and recovery takes place once a stroke patient is medically stable. The role of the rehabilitation team is to assist with the recovery process.

This team works with the patient and caregiver to reduce disability in the following areas:

• Mobility (e.g., moving in bed, getting up from a chair, sitting on a toilet)
• Locomotion (e.g., walking, using a wheelchair, climbing stairs)
• Self care (e.g., grooming, cooking)
• Communication (e.g., speech problems, difficulty remembering appropriate words)
• Swallowing
• Cognition (e.g., mental functioning and organization, memory problems)
• Control of bowel and bladder function
