Intensive Care

Patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at DeGraff Memorial Hospital are there due to serious illness or injuries. Nurses and physicians in the ICU provide constant observation, monitoring and compassionate care with the help of state-of-the-art technology, including monitors and ventilators, for around the clock care.

The multidisciplinary team that cares for ICU patients includes a physician, registered nurse, personal care assistants, secretaries, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, discharge planners, dieticians, pastoral care, and physical and occupational therapists. The ICU team is a partnership of skilled health care specialists dedicated to patients' recovery.

ICU nurses care for fewer patients because of the complexity of patients' needs. Each patient has his or her own glass-encased room, which allows for close observation.

Often, seeing ICU patients can be overwhelming for families because of all the alarms, wires, tubes and equipment. However, family input is vital to patients' recovery. The ICU nurse is readily available to answer questions regarding care. To ensure patient privacy, the hospital requests families appoint one spokesperson to communicate with the rest of the family and friends.

Certain restrictions have been put into effect to protect patients' well-being. Only two visitors are allowed at the bedside at any time. Families are welcome to visit at any hour with the exception of one hour between 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
