Hospital Reuse Development

Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo

Kaleida Health is committed to a transparent process for the reuse of the Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo (WCHOB) campus. The goal of the process is to ensure that future use of the site takes into account the uniqueness of the community and the urban character of the property.

Located on Bryant Street between Elmwood and Delaware Avenues, the campus footprint extends across Hodge Avenue to Utica Street. The main campus contains seven buildings and several separate structures, parking lots and a garage within its more than seven acres.

As a first step, Kaleida Health held preliminary discussions in the fall of 2012 and the beginning of 2013. Community leaders with an interest in the future development of the Bryant, Hodge, and Utica Street properties were invited to discuss their vision for the reuse process and how to engage the public in the decisions ahead.

With additional community input from an open forum held in January 2013, Kaleida Health named a project advisory committee (PAC) in April 2013. The PAC is a cross section of community members chosen to reflect a diversity of viewpoints from immediate neighbors, local businesses, leaders of community based organizations, professionals with relevant expertise, people from major community institutions and more.

In their initial meetings during summer 2013, the PAC developed a community values statement and initiated work around market research and developing a request for proposal (RFP).

To further address the request for market research, which will be used to inform potential developers about community needs and plans for investment in the area, Kaleida Health is supporting the Elmwood Village Association’s Elmwood Village Neighborhood Plan.

The plan, designed by urban planning, architecture and environmental design consultation firm, eco_logic STUDIO and Rose Hernandez Planning Partners, will address green space and streetscape, parking and transportation, and the health of the commercial district.

With support from the Mayor's Office of Strategic Planning, Kaleida Health and the Baird Foundation, the final plan will serve as a partner document to the RFP and aid the reuse process moving forward.
