May Update: New Hospital Begins Taking Shape
Exciting progress continues on the physician-led plan to build a new hospital and new ambulatory care center, to include an ambulatory surgery center, on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
Floor plans and the size of the new hospital have begun to take shape following intensive planning by the physician-led steering committee. This planning includes work with Sg2, an internationally known health care analytics organization, which helped gather information and market data from multiple sources, including several interviews of physicians, operational leadership and others.
The final analysis and vision will help establish the size of the new hospital, the ambulatory care building and location of services within each. It will also help determine the type and the number of inpatient beds and all other services needed to build for the future.
While the analysis is very detailed and specific to each type of patient, procedure and level of care that has trended in recent years to date and projected through 2020, the findings can be summarized as projecting a 14% decline in patient volume for pediatric and OB/GYN services overall for WNY. However, strategic plans that have led to significant advances in market share and development of new services in recent years will be instrumental in driving growth to meet the need for specialized pediatric and women's health services now and in the future.
Also included in the analysis is the continuing trend of increasingly delivering care on an outpatient basis, and the increasing complexity and severity of cases admitted for critical care.
As a result, the physician-led steering committee has forwarded the following bed and room capacity for the new inpatient hospital:
| Neonatal Intensive Care Unit beds
Mother-Baby Unit and High Risk beds
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit beds
Total Inpatient Pediatric Beds
|Labor & Delivery rooms
Labor & Delivery triage rooms
Total L & D and L & D Triage Rooms
| Operating rooms
C-section operating rooms
Total Inpatient Operating Rooms*
| Emergency Dept. rooms
Emergency Dept. observation rooms
Total ED and Observational Rooms
* Does not include eight operating rooms in the Ambulatory Care Center connected by a direct link access to the inpatient hospital.
All market data and input gathered has been incorporated into planning underway with the architect to create the most effective, efficient and impressive hospital. The ability for each area to be flexible in response to changing needs and volumes will also be a primary objective for the design.
