Adult Partial Hospital Program

The Buffalo General Medical Center Adult Partial Hospital Program offers intensive outpatient treatment to people experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms that impair functioning at home and on the job. This level of care is designed to stabilize acute symptoms with the intention of avoiding an inpatient hospitalization or to reduce the length of a hospital stay.

Insurance Coverage

Medicaid, Medicare and most other commercial and managed care companies are accepted.  Most managed care companies will require pre-authorization prior to entering the program.

Accreditation/Licensure

The Partial Hospital Program is licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health and accredited by DNV.

Program Structure

The Partial Hospital Program offers up to six hours of treatment each day from Monday through Friday (lunch is provided).

Treatment is provided by a team of nurses, social workers and a psychiatrist, including:

  • individual and group counseling
  • cognitive behavioral treatment modalities
  • psycho-education
  • medication stabilization and administration
  • recreational therapy
  • case management
  • advocacy

Each patient is assigned a primary therapist who, together with the treatment team, coordinates his or her individualized treatment.  The program involves family and/or significant others by offering sessions to discuss treatment, support and community resources.

Admission Requirements

Individuals who:

  • are 18 years-of-age or older
  • have a DSM IV psychiatric diagnosis
  • exhibit psychiatric symptoms that create a significant or profound impairment in day to day social, vocational and or educational functioning
  • are willing and able to contract for safety
  • live in a suitable environment for personal safety
  • are believed to be capable of adequate behavioral control and are capable of accessing appropriate assistance when outside of the program
  • have failed to make significant clinical gains within a traditional outpatient setting, or have not attempted such treatment and for whom the success of traditional outpatient treatment is doubtful, due to the severity of their symptoms
  • are ready for discharge from an inpatient setting but are assessed to be in continued need of daily monitoring and support, as well as ongoing intensive therapeutic intervention
  • experience symptoms that, without an intensive outpatient program, would require inpatient hospitalization
  • may require treatment for dual disorders of mental illness & addictions

Discharge Criteria

  • Treatment goals have been met and/or the individual has stabilized
  • The individual’s clinical condition has improved as reflected in reduced impairment in daily functioning and symptom reduction
  • The patient is ready and able to return to social, vocational and educational activities or goals and does not require as an intensive level of care

Expectations of Group Members

Group members will:

  • respect the rules of confidentiality
  • remain sober during during program hours
  • refrain from physical or verbal abuse toward self and others
  • maintain a personal appearance appropriate for a work or social setting
  • refrain from a sexual or a romantic relationship with other program members
  • be on time, attend regularly, and contact the program if they are unable to attend on a particular day at (716) 859-4817
