Types of Care

Acute Care

Patients with serious or life-threatening injuries or illnesses are assigned a bed on the unit where some or all of the following may be experienced:

  • Examination by a physician
  • Blood tests
  • EKG (heart tracing)
  • IV Fluids
  • A visit from a specialist
  • Diagnostic testing such as: CT scan, doppler studies, ultrasound, MRI/MRA, X-ray

Test results will allow the emergency physician to determine appropriate treatment. 

Fast Track or Non-Acute Care

Fast-Track is the area where non-threatening injuries or illnesses are treated quickly and efficiently. Patients may experience some or all of the following:

  • Examination by a member of the emergency team
  • Treatment and instructions for follow-up care with a doctor or a specialist
  • Blood tests 

Mental Wellness / Behavioral Health

The Buffalo General Medical Center Emergency Department offers compassionate counselors for patients having difficulty coping with personal or stress-related issues.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners

Buffalo General Medical Center has several Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners on staff who are specially trained in forensic examination of sexual assault victims and who have passed the rigorous certification exam.
